COMMENTAIRE The Republic of Benin is bordered by Nigeria to the West, Burkina Faso to the Northwest, Niger to Northeast, and the Atlantic Ocean to the South. The total area measures 112,600 square kilometres a former French colony, Benin is about 700 km long and 120 km wide in the south, increasing to 300 km in the North. It is about the size as the U.S. state of Pennsylvania. The population is 7 million.
It must be recalled that as part of the so-called Slaves Coast, Ouidah, one of the major and most active ports in the area at that time, was the centerpiece of the slave trade in the region. Over the past thirteen years the country has adopted a pluralistic democracy and a market economy that makes it a haven of political and economic stability.
The Republic of Benin has long held the belief that we, on the African continent, must come together with our brothers and sisters of the black Diaspora to cleanse our spirit of the damage inflicted during slavery and to begin on the long road to finding peace and reconciliation with others. Henceforth, for years, Benin’s leaders and people have been seeking in different ways to connect worldwide wide their kinsfolk of the Diaspora.
In 1998, at Benin’s opening ceremony of the da Silva museum in Porto-Novo (The capital City), his Excellency Mathieu Kerekou, president of republic of Benin had words:
“We owe to ourselves never to forget these absent ones standing among us who did not die of their own death, to acknowledge our share of responsibility in the humiliation and opprobrium, to fell shame for what our absent ones did, to look differently at the false images, to surrender to forgiveness in order to start afresh and pursue our goal towards progress, and free ourselves from misery without succumbing to vanity of material possession. For Africans, this awareness opens the way to forgiveness and reconciliation.”
